Quite often, setting up a local area network (LAN) can be burdensome. Wireless networks can encounter interference. They are often slow and lack much range. Wired solutions, on the other hand, require the drilling of holes in the walls and stringing cables throughout the building. While they do offer greater speed than wireless networks, they still have a problem with range. The new wireless 802.11n draft standard does improve considerably in these areas, however, there is another alternative that surprisingly gets hardly any press coverage at all. And that is ethernet through the electrical wiring.

Powerline ethernet adapters make a very viable solution that is overlooked a great deal. Holocron Pro Labs has conducted some testing and determined that these retain about 80-85% of bandwidth from a modem. Speeds vary depending on the particular product, but they can be up to 200 Mbit/s. This kind of network makes a great solution to streaming high-definition video content.

Some people may require, in certain situations, to have even their wired network encrypted. This may be a concern of people using a LAN over powerlines. But this kind of network also supports encryption. So only the people with the key can unlock the network.

Overall, this is another, plug and play, viable alternative to the networking problem.
